Statement:
This work was made whilst on residency at The Columbia, London last year. The overarching theme for all residents was 'Connectivity in the modern day'. Bex Massey therefore looked at the impact that Covid 19 had had on her 'connectivity' and what part social media had played in helping her surf the isolation whilst further compounding the separation.
With the impetus towards virtual connectivity where physical meetings were prohibited-‘nothing had changed’ as we all tried to plaster a smile over our faces and be thankful for our health whilst others perished and the world edged into turmoil. The reality is that-as human beings we need physical interactions as necessity-so ‘everything had changed’. This series ‘Like, winky kiss, 100’ took Masseys Instagram Stories Archive (since Covid began) as its visual library; created an algorithm to select which date to tackle and mimicked the Instagram story ratio via stretcher dimensions and motifs. These works flatten imagery as it would be by a screen, whilst conversely expanding the visual landscape through layering. These trapped figures and objects teeter in their isolation-surrounded by Colour Theories answer to anxiety.
