Statement:
I create paintings that are modest in size and designed to hang on a wall, my preferred medium is oil on primed boards.
I procure pre-cut wooden panels and administer six layers of various acrylic primers, glass paper is employed to this veneer to render a smooth finish, I then apply a layer of Thixotropic Alkyd primer which produces a surface with extra creamy flatness.
About the studio, I paint traditionally placing a board on an easel using an artist’s pallet.
I am interested in the entertainment of visceral poetry placed in a universe of my mark-making and manipulation of paint. I have a diverse library of references involving the magic realism of authors such as Shakespeare, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, animators The Quay Brothers, and Tim Burton, and my peers within the contemporary surrealist painting, to mention just a few.
My creations are rarely solemn and are often whimsical in nature.
In my current series of paintings, I depict imaginary topiary in formal landscapes sculpted onto an illustrated narrative. In an almost theatrical construct.
My recent focus has turned towards the environment and climate emergency it seems to some as if nothing has changed but scientific data shows us that everything has changed.
Is it time to consider exploiting the solar system, and utilising this supply of unlimited resources? Mars would seem to be the place to begin?
Or will our fate mirror that of the people of Easter Island?
