Statement:
The work depicts the intersection of the man-made with the natural world, and that ever changing dynamic. It is a natural world full of ambiguity rather than a romanticisation.

Keats' negative capability; the capacity to accept mystery and doubt rather than the demand for certainty, underscores my philosophical approach to painting. Whether in allegorical works or more oblique atmospheres, my paintings seek to capture a place where uncomfortable realities seep in; a search for belonging, a presentiment of loss, anxiety and entropy. But so too hope is evident; nature, redemptive if indifferent, is relished for all its beautiful tangled complexity.
My two submitted works seek to point to that place where something quotidien hinges on being something else. A bucolic scene, a car in a country lane, a lake. Turn the dial, the mask slips; is it a flood, a silent spring. Or is it both? Nothing and everything has changed.
