Statement:
'Swallowtail' uses the motif of swallowtail bunting as a device to create a logic and an image. Bunting can be something flat yet can also exist as a three-dimensional object. The brushwork is deliberately haphazard and each fragment of paint is sewn together with transparent thread. This process - in tandem with the object/surface dichotomy - is the aim of the artwork: as a comment on painting's ability to be sculptural and to follow a dynamic process of subverting the application of applying paint to a surface.

"This painting was made in reverse. Firstly, paint (house paint, acrylic, poster paint) was applied to a porcelain tile, building up each layer with glazes of gesso primer. Once dry, the skins of paint were peeled off leaving a shape of pure paint. Each of these pieces were sewn together in a pattern to create a unified substance. Finally, the surface was lined with scrap canvas to allow it to be attached to a wooden frame and be mounted to a wall."

Canvas has not been directly painted on, only paint and thread construct the surface.
