Statement:
Diane Rogan is researching contemporary re-writing of ancient mythology, feminist political theory, philosophy questioning new ideas of the human, and aesthetics particularly the representation of women in painting.
Considering the cliché of painting from art history, the artist has a problem with depictions of passivity of women in the western canon, so, she is thinking about ways of being somehow antagonistic to that passivity while engaging head on with the arcadian romantic landscape, portraiture, and the figure.
The artist is exploring the construction of three-dimensional space using formal arrangements of line and geometry and deconstruction through application and removal of paint layers, mark making and attention to detail, social political, psychological, and mythical configurations of power and relationships present within fantasy arcadian spaces.
Achieving space and objects in the paintings is approached with delicacy and softness, signs of a certain kind of femininity. Whilst painting’s structure and composition form the foundations thin layers of oil paint give way to thicker layered areas, which disrupt the surface. The intention is for areas to recede, advance and dissolve into abstraction countered by areas of figuration. A painterly dialogue is set up: violence, seduction, action, and stillness.
Contrasting areas of light and tone are achieved through a longstanding investigation in the exploration of colour. Mood and atmosphere are important and colour, it’s qualities, application and re-working build up meaning, and psychological resonance. Spaces and bodies have become fluid. Form, colour, and space are the primary considerations.
