These ‘paintings’ are part of ‘The Untimely Death of Art’ series of extended paintings/painted soft sculpture. This ongoing body of work comprises hand sewn stuffed canvas constructions, painted with acrylic paint. The series is based on a visual and tactile exploration of the mythologies and iconographies associated with a wide
ranging, and personal, selection of artists, whose oeuvres were cut short by their untimely passing.
On a more formal level, this work is an investigation into what happens when acrylic painting on canvas loses the traditional stretcher support, and comes off the flat terrain of the studio or gallery wall.
Nothing has changed - Everything has changed
I started The Untimely Death series, shortly after my father passed away last Summer, he was a practicing painter and ceramicist. The series evolved from thinking about how the artist’s death alters how we view their work. Although the work hasn’t physically or visually
changed, it resonates differently after the artist passes.
Important considerations for me, while making work are:- the use of imagery, narrative, identity, colour, finish, symbols, visual impact, form and space, process, surface, material, meaning and resolution.
