Statement:
My work is inspired by childhood and the transitional struggles of growing up. Previously using personal imagery or objects as references, I now use found photos, cinematic and literary references to generate nostalgic images with an underlying strangeness, sadness, or uneasy undertones. Within my current working process, I experiment with image combinations and sequences. These produce disjointed narratives that can span across multiple canvases.
Upstream and The Mudbank are the opening and closing scenes to a such a story that follows the trail of an unknown girl through the trees. Intended as a coming-of-age allegory the paintings reference Alice in Wonderland both visually and thematically, particularly the subplot around Alice’s loss of childhood innocence.
