Statement:
I am painter based in Glasgow, and over recent years, my work has focused on using painting to think about engagement with surfaces, physical movement and our experience of space in various ways. Such investigations have taken the form of expanded field installations, meditations on chain link fences and intricate painted weaves, and have encompassed text written in paint. These works have shared a sense of trying to pin down ideas related to proximity and distance, and communicating the changing ways in which we understand our surroundings.
Further Apart, Closer Together, references the experience of existing in space with other people in an abstracted manner. At a glance, the painting presents as a simple abstracted suite of inter-related brushmarks, revealing new intricacies upon very close inspection of the surface, as overlapping and woven strokes become apparent. Our relationship with surfaces has changed in recent times, and even the action of being pulled close to a surface, is a newly challenging experience.
A Different Sort of Stress is part of a suite of cursive script paintings made by pushing and pulling paint on a surface, which looks to tap into a personal feeling of change with regard to experiencing space. The space in this instance is that of the workspace: a return to it shouldn’t have been more stressful than before the pandemic, but of course there are new and different sorts of anxiety present in that arena, which I acutely feel – reflected upon here by the repeated cursive script.
