Statement:
In The Red Cord there is a current flowing between the man and the woman.
An umbilical rope or even a ribbon, a thought, an initiatory gesture, a memory, an electrical current. Work on energetic centres in the body, dreams of snakes and the feelings arising from the awakening of Mother Kundalini are all here. But also longing, the desire and need to be recognised and held (persistent themes in my work).
In my return to oil painting over two years ago I was determined to shed politeness and to seek out direct responses to powerful inner realisations in my psyche; it's coincided with two and half years of psychoanalysis which have indeed meant for me that nothing has changed and yet everything has changed: my marriage is over; I’ve awoken to the rottenness of the English political system (and I’m a keyboard warrior); and in the painting certainty is breaking down, bodies are opening, there is trauma, there is change, there is re-alignment.
