In essence my paintings explore the significance of protection and security when met with different forms of disintegration, uncertainty and vulnerability. The paintings are located within the genre of the sublime and I am interested in remaking aspects of the past into something new to create a sense of evocative dislocation. I am intrigued by the rapidity of change and how this can uproot and destroy the norm instantaneously. Blackened gold and Drift are paintings of imagined places that depict fragility and disquiet through the tonality of light and atmosphere. They portray a sense of impending catastrophe and its aftermath; whilst not depicting actual events, the sense of foreboding and unrest is real. The painted surface is built up in layers of transparent gradations of colour to create light, atmosphere and a sense of illumination from within. The narrative is recognisable and familiar but at the same time unsettling and reflects upon our current times in a poignant way.
