Statement:
My paintings, Gorse (2022) and Clear Day (2022) are inspired by the present. A gorse bush I walk by everyday, the same bush but never the same, the air between me and the sky always changing.
It is how I feel about painting. I do not plan a painting; I begin with a vague idea or memory of an experience of being in the world. Then it is an activity of engagement with materials, and with time spent in the studio. I mix a colour, make a brush mark, and then another. I make mistakes, cover them up, allow for accidents and generally problem solve until the painting is visually interesting to me and maybe holds something of the original motivation I had in making it.
