Statement:
My paintings are screen-grabs from the films that play in my head. They are of characters and details which bubble up to the surface of a roiling mix composed of elements of dreams, and reality, and all the fictional media I spend time looking at or reading. When I make paintings of them I feel like I am making something real which had been ephemeral and uncertain in my mind.
During Covid lockdown I was unable to go and work in my studio so I started working at home using oil pastels on paper, because of constraints on space in my home. However, this change in my working methods fortuitously marked a development for me which I really enjoyed and benefited from. I love the immediacy and speed of using oil pastel as well as the effects particular to the medium. Since then I have been trying to translate these positive aspects of that material to painting with acrylic paint, where previously I had always used oil paint, and I feel like just lately I am seeing worthwhile results.
