Statement:
In my work I am interested in the way the painting process can be explored as something not as a settled notion of picture making but as a process that is being constantly renegotiated and potentially having no clear boundaries at all. Surfaces include gestures and marks which suggest a liminal space where traces of activity sit between absence and presence or something in between, neither one or the other. Surfaces and gestures reflect traces or evidence of actions from the hand or body, each mark navigating the surface independently, feeling and searching, pressing, and touching. The touch is an action that can be as sensitive as a breath or a caress, both are actions which remind us not only of our presence but also a ghost of a presence. I am interested in creating paintings which I hope offers an encounter which is constantly being negotiated or challenged; a transition where the intimate questioning of material, surface, boundaries, and edge reveal multiple spaces where the absent self is still somewhere present within.
