Lakota Feb 2020. Initially I wanted to paint this image taken in the corner of the ladies toilets in the context of examining communal and historical significance of night clubs and the beauty of these spaces. The layers of paint and the empty space of removed machinery physically document changes to the space bringing up questions as to what intangible changes these physical marks document. These ideas took on a new context as lockdowns caused problems for independent venues everywhere, with nightclubs being the worst affected. Lakota remains open today despite multiple threats of redevelopment throughout its history. It seems that during the lockdowns everything and nothing had changed for these venues as they remain some of the most fragile and transient structures in the creative community.
