Statement:
Street Painting No.12 is from a series of figurative paintings based on photographs taken in London where I live and work. Using these initial photographs I work to capture and represent the overlooked elements of our contemporary streets in the resulting painting. I search for the quiet, everyday, obliquely glanced subjects to make these figurative works. Often elements from several photographs are used to make one painting and therefore they are not intended to be a record of place but to have contemporary authenticity.
I regard the initial photographs as the drawing or map for the painting and while I try and stay true to the intention mapped out I allow the process and play of painting to change compositional and colour elements of the resulting work. This is to shift the balance of the work away from visual documentation and towards its abstract qualities.
Since attending the Turps Banana full time painting programme between 2014 and 2016, my paintings have been shown nationally and been bought by collectors internationally. Previous to this I graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1995 with a MPhil in Printed Textile Design and ran a successful design business selling work worldwide.
