The paintings I have submitted to Beep are two of six which were started together at the beginning of March 2022. They are all made using the same materials and dimensions. On each one, I set out to create a sculptural protagonist within a stage format. However, the invasion of Ukraine at that time became such a shocking and overwhelming story that all six works took on military or defensive elements that obliterated the stage forms.
Hitler’s ‘Atlantic Wall’ is a string of defensive structures of varying designs, which run down the west coast of Europe. ‘Untitled 3.22’ is based on one of these. The painting surface is scoured with previous forms still visible under the bunker.
‘Draft’ also has a scoured ground, overlaid with a shadow, which is disproportionately large for the object, which casts it. A fringe of colours running up the edge of the painting echoes the ribbons on military medals.
We thought conventional war had gone. We took for granted functioning democracies, affordable food and cheap interest. But time has been made to fold on itself and round we go.
