Statement:
I am very interested in exploring the relationship between film and painting. I am drawn towards the concept of fracture; fractured memory (particularly false memory) and narrative. As source material I often use postcards and family photographs. I mine these images to help me create uneasy constructs connected to specific places and times.
Recently I have been using travel postcards which often provide surreal stage sets. There is often an interesting dislocation between the image on the front and the text on the reverse.
Painting itself can also be a metaphor for travel.
Certain authors/novels have been important influences, in particular Kazuo Ishiguro: Never Let Me Go, Toni Morrison Beloved, The Bluest Eye and W.G. Seabald The Rings of Saturn. These works all manage to powerfully convey the essence of what I am searching for in a painting. I appreciate the atmosphere in the works of George Shaw, although not necessarily the hyper reality of his technique.
I regularly exhibit nationally and have work in public and private collections. For ten years I taught contextual studies at Swansea College of Art and Design.
